Ausreissen-Testserie

Actually, such a study was done in 1974. Back in the 70s many collage students gladly signed up for studies that put them at risk in return for some quick cash. I did myself, although I was not part of this study. It was done at a collage in California and was sponsored by a cosmetic firm and a group of plastic surgeons. 50 students (42 female, 8 male) participated and were paid $750 each. They were required to have stable ear piercings (over two years) that were in good condition and health. A small steel loop was threaded through the piercing and was attached to a stress gauge as well as a device that measured vertical motion. Both feed information to a chart recorder. At the given time, the assembly was pulled down 10cm, tearing out the earlobe. The results were quite impressive. The weakest earlobe ruptured at 3.3kg (About 10 pounds American), the strongest ruptured at 9.8kg! The average break occurred at 7.5kg. (About the weight of a small portable TV.) There was little variance between male and female tests. It was found that the rupture occurred in two stages. In stage one, at about 30% of the tear-out weight, the piercing channel, or skin tunnel, would break open. The loop would almost immediately tear through the soft part of the lobe, stopping short of tearing out of the bottom. There, a gathering of skin and other internal structures would make one last stand. This tends to explain why most people who experience a tear, only receive a partial tear. Once the final limit was exceeded, these structures would rupture almost simultaneously. The resulting numbers surprised all those involved. It is worth noting that momentive dynamics can cause small weights to produce stress levels many times their own weight. Still, most earrings would fail long before these numbers are reached which explains why most of us will make it through a whole lifetime without a tear-out.
